Nitrogen Deficiency in Banana

Nitrogen: Leaves of all ages become pale green. Mid ribs, petioles and leaf sheaths turn reddish pink and rosette in appearance. Plantations with poor root growth exhibit such symptoms. Bunch weight and fruit quality is affected.

Control:

Application of urea (300g/plant) followed by irrigation is recommended. OR

Apply Agrilabh’s NITO @ 1 ml/lit of water for spray and 2 ml/lit of water for drip. OR

Foliar spray of urea 2% at weekly intervals till disappearance of the deficiency symptom.

Nitrogen deficiency made worse by

  • Low or high pH soils
  • Sandy or light soils (leaching)
  • Low organic matter
  • Drought conditions
  • High rainfall (leaching) or heavy irrigation
  • Addition or high levels of non-decomposed organic matter/manure (eg straw)
  • Fast growing crops

Nitrogen is important for

  • Key role in many growth processes
  • High demand for growth, yield and quality
  • Increases bunch weight, number of hands/bunch
  • Level of dry matter, sugars and TSS/Acid ratio of fruit improved
  • Helps optimizing vitamin C levels in the fruit
  • Germination and development of daughter sucker
